The Derivativeness of Essence has been interpreted in different ways in contemporary scholarship. This article clarifies its meaning through a new reading of the mode of determination of the Natural Universal in Mullā Ṣadrā’s philosophy. It first explains the three aspects of essence and the relation of the Natural Universal to the unconditioned (lā bi-sharṭ) aspect. It then argues, by examining the two senses of “being” in Ṣadrian philosophy, that the Natural Universal is realized only in the sense of being predicable of an externally existing thing. Finally, an analysis of Mullā Ṣadrā’s texts, especially those concerning union, identity, and the realization of existence and essence, shows that, first, expressions such as “identity” and “union” deny a predicative relation between existence and essence and instead refer to the unity of the indicator and the indicated. Second, the Natural Universal never has external realization but is the product of conceptual consideration and intellectual abstraction from the analogically graded levels of existence. Third, Ṣadrā’s texts do not support the interpretations of commentators such as Fayyāḍī and Yazdānpanāh, who maintain that essence has external realization.
