Many philosophers have discussed conscience and moral conscience and put forward various perspectives. Allameh Jafari is one such thinker who has addressed this issue more extensively than other contemporary philosophers;yet, his works contain a corresponding number of ambiguous and contradictory statements regarding the existential nature of conscience, without offering a resolution to these conflicts.These contradictions include the characterization of conscience as both potential and actual;capable of both weakening and ceasing to exist;both singular and manifold;and possessing both a cognitive and a motivational existential dimension.Through a descriptive-analytical study of Allameh’s complete works,this article aims to briefly outline these contradictions and propose general and specific justifications and solutions The findings indicate that,according to Allameh Jafari’s perspective,conscience should be identified as the soul itself or as one of its faculties namely,reason.Consequently,it exhibits various characteristics from different standpoints without giving rise to contradiction.The specific solutions are as follows:a)regarding what it currently possesses,conscience is actual,whereas regarding what it lacks but will acquire, it is potential; b)it is singular in relation to the human species,yet manifold in relation to individual human beings; c)it may lose its higher levels and weaken, but it is never annihilated; d)regarding the cognitive aspect, it functions solely as a perceiver and knower, and regarding the practical aspect,solely as a motivator and agent while simultaneously possessing both cognitive and motivational dimensions.
