چکیده
ارسطو در کتاب متافیزیک[1]به طورکلی سه تعریف بنیادی از دانش فلسفه ارائه می‌دهد. دانش بررسی علل و اصول نخستین اشیاء، دانش بررسی موجود چونان موجود و دانش بررسی وجود نخستین (جوهر). این تعاریف سه‌گانه به‌رغم تنوع مفهومی - که خود برخاسته از تفاوت منظر و به ویژه مراحل مختلف تقرب به ذات مسئله است - نظر به حقیقتی واحد (وجود) دارند که موضوع دانش فلسفه است. علاوه بر این، به‌رغم تفسیر بعضی مفسران مبنی بر اینکه ارسطو موضوع یا موضوع‌های دیگری را نیز برای فلسفه برشمرده است با بررسی متونی که از آن‌ها چنین برداشتی شده آشکار می‌گردد که او صرفاً در صدد معرفی دانشی است که شایستگی بررسی چنین موضوعاتی را دارد نه آنکه بخواهد این امور را موضوعات انحصاری دانش فلسفی بداند. از این رو نه میان تعاریف سه‌گانه تعارضی وجود دارد و نه موضوعی غیر از این امور مطرح شده است تا اسباب تعارض در فهم وی از موضوع فلسفه باشد. در واقع ارسطو از ماهیت فلسفه تلقی یگانه‌ای دارد.

In metaphysics, Aristotle has provided three definitions of philosophy. 1. Philosophy is the science of first causes and principles 2. Philosophy is the science of studying being qua being 3. Philosophy is the science of studying first being. By examining the relevant texts we show there is no inconsistency between these definitions. Indeed, each definition explains one aspect of the essence of the metaphysics: being.
