The solution for the ecological crisis that has engulfed planet Earth requires the cooperation of all human beings. However, such cooperation is not possible without an agreement over the universal norms in environmental ethics. Considering differences in world view and approaches to morality among different cultures and schools of thought, the question thus arises: “How can we reach such an agreement?”. The fundamental claim of this article is that we can utilise the concept of “overlapping consensus” to reach such an agreement. According to this idea, it is not necessary to agree upon justifying foundations in environmental ethics to reach such an agreement. Rather, it would be sufficient that the required universal norms be formulated in such a way that their justification does not depend upon a particular religious tradition or a comprehensive scientific, philosophical or moral school of thought, and that the followers of different traditions and schools of thought would be able to agree upon these norms based on reasons accepted by their particular tradition and school. This article will try to show that such an agreement over the “moral obligation to respect nature”, as a fundamental norm in environmental ethics, is possible. For example, Muslims can acknowledge this norm based on the teachings of their own religion, whereas the proponents of the theory of “respect for nature”, as a meta-religious theory in environmental ethics, can justify the same norm based on their meta-religious foundations.
